I’ve decided to move my blog on to Medium for 5 reasons. I’ll start with the most important one.
1.Because I need money.
I just quit my job, I’m unemployed, I spend all day writing these blog posts and I’ve never been happier. And yet, in a capitalist society I am a failure. Money is how we define success. If you have lots of money, you are successful. I believe that is bull shit. I do not define my success by money, but I still have to live within the structures of our society. I can try to change them, but I still have to live within them. Thus, I need money. By not getting paid for my writing, I am saying that my that my time and effort is not valuable. And that is not true, I have spent thousands of dollars and twelve years of my life to learn how to write well. Every single day since I was 13, I have practiced writing in my journal for at least thirty minutes. I have completed a university degree in English Literature and Modern History, as well as taken an additional five writing courses. I have also edited and published an online magazine where I published over 300 articles, as well as my own blog. All this I have done out of my own pockets, and my parents, because I believe it is a valuable skill in society. I don’t want to have to sell my writing skill, enthusiasm, and creativity to corporate giants like Coca Cola, Johnson & Johnson, and Time Warner to live. Personally, I believe that soda, candy, and beauty products are a complete waste of human resources and should be removed from the shelves immediately. They have absolutely no value to society other than to make people more unhealthy, more insecure, and more broke. I want to use my time, effort, and skills to make the world a better place.
I believe that Medium has a business model and mission statement that focuses on the needs of the reader and the writer, not the board of directors. I didn’t study economics, I don’t understand business models, and I don’t want to work in PR or marketing anymore. The team at Medium are experts in all the things that I am not, and thus, we will be collaborating. I don’t know how to programme, I know how to write. And I have a lot of fucking opinions. All humans have a lot of fucking opinions; to be human is to have opinions. To quote Descartes, “I think therefore I am.” The original idea behind our society was to develop experts so that we could work more efficiently together to make the world a better place. We need to get better at working together… I’m talking to you, Britain & America! (What the fuck is this Brexit shit?! Make America Great Again – it should be MAKE THE ENTIRE FUCKING PLANET A DECENT PLACE TO LIVE FOR EVERYONE FINALLY)
2. Because the founder of Medium is not trying to make money, he is trying to make the world a better place.
Evan Williams is an inspiring role model who has been a pioneer in the tech industry and has already had an incredible impact on the world. He is one of the co-founders of Twitter and basically coined the term “blogger”. Twitter was founded in March 2006 and it wasn’t until February 2018 that Twitter made its first profit. And now that it is, Evan Williams is leaving to focus his time and energy on Medium as well as his other projects. He isn’t trying to make money, he’s trying to change the world.
3. Because his wife, Sara Williams is a Bad Bitch!
Sara Williams is a well educated woman with a variety of experiences. Her background is predominantly in Human Resources. Human Resources is an invaluable department within a corporation that focuses on the welfare of the employees as well as how to support employees in nurturing their skills and abilities. Not surprisingly, it is a female dominated industry as all care sector roles are. Also, one of her favourite books is How to Be Alone (100% going onto my reading list) & I am a big supporter of learning how to be alone (this poem!!). And her favourite movie is Amelie!
4. Because you should be writing your own ideas and thoughts, too!
By moving my blog on to Medium, my thoughts and articles will be shared with a community of bloggers and writers. You will be able to read those writings, too! And, you will also be able to publish your own writing. I believe that everyone needs to know how to write well in order to be successful in our modern day society. It is fundamental for communicating with each other and we do it all the time, already! From sending cover letters to emailing at work to texting and social media, you are reading and writing, you are listening and responding. I’m not writing to an empty room, I’m writing to my community, and I want to hear what you think! I want to support you in your creative expression just like you are supporting me in mine.
Facebook obviously doesn’t give a shit about us, they are just mining our data for big profits. Whenever you write a long post sharing your thoughts or feelings on Facebook, you are giving FB access to your personal motivations. They are selling that shit to whoever will pay more, and thus bombarding you with advertisements! I find it incredibly difficult to read your posts on the Facebook newsfeed. There are so many other elements on the screen that I can’t focus on what you’re saying. Instead, post it on Medium, and then I will be given a clean landing page that I can focus on. I can even comment on certain parts, and message you both publicly and privately. And, if I like it, I can “Clap” it – and you will get paid!
As for Instagram, Fuck Instagram! And fuck Snapchat, too! I don’t want to see images of your amazing life. I wasn’t there, I wasn’t invited, I was living my own fucking life and it was fucking fabulous, too. I don’t care what it looks like, I want to know how it made you feel. FOMO is an epidemic, and Instagram/ Snapchat are the virus. Anyway, it’s impossible to miss out because you were having a different, but equally important experience somewhere else. I will no longer be sharing my posts on Instagram, and I deleted my snapchat years ago because it gave me too much anxiety.
5. Because I need to stop complaining.
My little sister told me to stop complaining, and so I am. I’m not complaining. I’m telling you what I’m doing and how I’m going to live my life, and you can respond however the fuck you wanna.
PS. I will only be posting or responding to messages four days a week between the hours of 9am and 4pm because that is what I believe how much time should be spent on ‘administrative tasks’ and social media. We basically all need an assistant to keep up with the admin of having a life.
PSS. On Medium, you get paid by the claps, so if you feel like clapping my blog posts, then please do! I’ll be sharing my friends link with all of you so you can access it for freeeee <3
PSSS. To put my money where, my mouth is – I have purchased a year long subscription to Medium, and I would recommend you do as well. There articles are fantastic.
